Se tournant à nouveau
vers l'histoire de la peinture, il va y trouver en effet un "mythe,
artistique, passé et présent", celui de Van Gogh,
le peintre génial et méconnu de son temps, porté
au pinacle du nôtre, dont le cinéma s'est d'ailleurs emparé.
Il va en une sorte de saga dont la composition s'étendra sur
plusieurs années, le resituer à l'époque moderne,
lui inventer une vie édifiante et heureuse, banale et extraordinaire
comme doivent l'être toutes les histoires qui nourrissent les
songeries sentimentales et compatissantes du grand public.

Going back to the history of
painting, he is indeed going to find there an - "artistic myth, past
and present " -, that of Van Gogh, the brilliant painter and unknow
in his time, carried to the pinnacle today, and seized by the movie
world. He goes into a kind of saga whose composition will extend over
several years, to give him back to our time, to devise for him a fulfilling
and happy life, banal and extraordinary like all stories that feed the
sentimental and compassionate reveries of the large public should be.
